| Are you depressed? Inquire your doctor about Antidepressants |
In any given year, 10% of Americans suffer from a depressive disorder. This category of mental disorders includes major depression. Common symptoms of major depression are the following: - Feeling numb emotionally - Feeling upset or empty - Feeling slowed down or feeling dissatisfied and unable to sit still - Losing or putting on weight - Thoughts about death or suicide - Trouble thinking, recalling things or focusing - Problems sleeping, particularly in the early morning or waiting to sleep all the time - Feeling worn out all the time Depression is thought to be connected with chemical imbalances in the brain that makes it hard for cells to communicate with one another. Depression can be caused by nerve-racking times, such as the death of somebody you love, a divorce or job loss. But it can also come out of the blue. Certain medications, addiction to drugs and alcohol, or chronic diseases, such as diabetes or heart problems, can bring on depression. Depression can be treated with medicines, or specialist form of counseling called psychotherapy, or with both. Antidepressants are drugs used to help people who suffer from depression, i.e. Celexa(Citalopram). Chemicals in the brain called neurotransmitters are needed for regular brain work. Antidepressants help make these natural chemicals more available to the brain. Usually, antidepressants are taken leastways for 6 to 12 months. Sometimes, patients and their doctors may conclude that antidepressants are required for a longer time. They can better your mood, sleep, concentration and appetite. It may take a few weeks for them to help. Antidepressants are divided into several classes. You and your general practitioner may have to try several before finding what works best for you. Medicines sometimes lead to unexpected side effects. They may range from person to person and from drug to drug. For example, when you first start your antidepressant you may feel exhausted, have problems with sleep or have upset stomach. The side effects commonly disappear after a short time. Even after 12 months of treatment, there is still about a 10% probability of depression returning when treatment is finished. Some people take antidepressants for several years. <!--##-->
